How to Develop a Joy-Filled Writing Practice
Sparking Academic Joy
How to Develop a Joy-Filled Writing Practice
Academic joy doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. If you’re seeking more joy in your writing practice, this workshop is designed for you. We’ll explore how different kinds of writing retreats can cultivate, nurture, and spark joy in your writing practice. The session is grounded in the book I co-authored with Dr. Rose Ernst, Sparking Academic Joy: Writing Retreats for Scholars.
Shift from writing as a chore to writing as a practice
Cultivate joy exponents to root and nurture your writing
Weed out barriers that inhibit your ability to write
Learn to sustain your writing practice through triage, proactive, or inspirational retreats
“Sparking Academic Joy was an inspirational workshop. Dr. Davis’s warmth and expertise are both grounding and motivating!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Dr. Rose Ernst and I co-facilitate two workshop offerings: Sparking Academic Joy and Racial Gaslighting. We jointly developed the curricula and usually lead these sessions together. Because Rose is based in the UK and works remotely, any workshop we co-facilitate will be virtual or hybrid, with me on site and Rose joining online. We have extensive experience with hybrid delivery and it runs smoothly. When an entirely in-person format is required, when paired with an Exhale Writing Retreat, or upon client request, I can deliver the workshop solo.
Dr. Rose Ernst and Dr. Angelique M. Davis co-facilitate two workshop offerings: Sparking Academic Joy and Racial Gaslighting. The curricula for both workshops were jointly developed and are typically delivered together. Because Dr. Ernst is based in the UK and works remotely, co-facilitated workshops are offered in virtual or hybrid formats, with Davis on site and Dr. Ernst joining online. These hybrid sessions are well established and run smoothly. When an entirely in-person format is required—such as when paired with an Exhale Writing Retreat or upon client request—the workshop may be delivered by Davis as a solo facilitator.
Our workshops are customized to your organization’s needs. They are not passive lectures; every session includes interactive elements. In general, the longer the workshop, the more room there is for interaction and hands-on practice.
